This ham salad recipe is a great way to dress up ham (or use up leftover ham) for tasty sandwiches! It comes together fast and uses simple ingredients.

There’s a lot of ham salad recipes out there, so I wanted to make mine a little different. This is definitely one of those recipes where everyone seems to have grown up with a slightly different version. I added some smoked paprika to really enhance the smokiness of the ham, and white vinegar gives the sauce a bit of tanginess. Worcestershire and a pinch of garlic powder adds extra flavor. Pickles, red onions, and celery give it a nice crunch.

Recipe notes & tips:

  • You can definitely customize this recipe to your liking. Feel free to add/sub ingredients with what you’ve got on hand. I’ve even seen some ham salad recipes with hardboiled eggs, so you can add a couple to yours if you feel like it.
  • I don’t go crazy with the mayo, so you can add more if you like.
  • Some ham salad sandwiches have the ham very finely chopped (or even added to a food processor briefly if you want the texture to be more of a spread)… you can chop it even finer (or in larger pieces) depending on what you prefer texture-wise.

How to make ham salad sandwiches:

The sandwiches pictured are on brioche buns. You can use whatever kind of bread you prefer, though! I included some butter leaf lettuce for the photos. Sliced cucumber and tomatoes would be delicious as well. You could even add a slice of cheese.

Ham Salad

This ham salad recipe is a great way to dress up ham (or use up leftover ham) for tasty sandwiches! It comes together fast and uses simple ingredients.
Prep: 10 minutes
Total: 10 minutes
Servings: 6

Ingredients

  • 2 cups cooked ham chopped small
  • 2 sticks celery chopped small
  • 1/4 cup sweet pickles (or relish) chopped small
  • 2 tablespoons red onion chopped small
  • 1/4 cup mayo
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt & pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Chop the ham, celery, pickles, and onion, then add them to a medium bowl.
  • Add the mayo, smoked paprika, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, and garlic powder to a small bowl. Stir it together until it's smooth, and give it a taste and adjust ingredients as needed.
  • Add the dressing to the larger bowl and toss together until combined. If you're someone who loves mayo, you may need to add some more (I didn't go too heavy on the mayo). Season with salt & pepper as needed.
  • Use as a filling for sandwiches. You can serve right away or let it sit in the fridge for a few hours for the flavors to meld a bit. The mixture will keep for a few days in the fridge.

Notes

  • Feel free to chop/shred your ham to your desired texture.
  • Serves 4-6 depending how much you add to a sandwich.
  • This recipe is very forgiving and will work if you sub/add ingredients based on what you've got in your fridge.
